In November, Eugene voters will have the opportunity to renew the Eugene Public Library levy first approved in 2015. Renewing the levy will ensure that the Library can continue to meet demand for services, both in this uncertain time and for five years. The proposed levy is a slightly lower rate than currently, estimated to cost $37 per year for the typical homeowner.
The levy will maintain the current schedule at the Bethel and Sheldon branches (the existing levy added 22 hours per week), a full seven-day schedule at the downtown library, and funds for materials and resources (both books and electronic resources). It will support student success, provide access for underserved populations, and help our community recover from the impacts of COVID-19.
Since the pandemic, demand for the Library’s virtual resources has almost doubled, and they have issued 1,000 new library cards. Even with building closures, staff have been available remotely, and they have been busy. The levy will provide high-quality online tutoring, career development and job-search resources. When it’s safe to meet in person, the Library will provide space for partner agencies and programs.
And when the Library can be fully open, it will resume story times, teen groups, the Maker’s Space and adult programs, with special emphasis on diversity.
